Description
The NANO DAC Signature V5 is a digital-to-analogue converter designed for demanding hi-fi systems. It processes PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz as well as native DSD up to 4x/256, allowing it to accept a wide variety of digital sources without degradation caused by intermediate conversion.
The connectivity comprises three S/PDIF inputs, three TOS-Link inputs, one AES-EBU input, one USB input compatible with PCM and DSD (with DSD carried in DoP mode), as well as an input on an HDMI socket accepting PCM in I2S and DSD in native mode. The I2S format, used here for the PCM stream, is regarded as the most transparent interface for this type of signal, as it separates the clock and the data rather than combining them as conventional S/PDIF does.
This V5 version introduces a revised conversion stage, refined management of digital filters and the SRC (Sample Rate Converter), as well as reworked internal wiring to reduce interference. Three output levels are provided, including a boosted mode allowing the unit to be connected directly to a power amplifier, without an intermediate preamplifier.
The electronic design is fully balanced, from the conversion stage through to the outputs. The unit offers both balanced and unbalanced outputs, making it easier to integrate into hi-fi systems of varying design. A high-level headphone amplifier is also built in, along with a remote control allowing input selection and volume adjustment.

What to check before buying used
On a DAC of this generation, the USB and HDMI connectors are the most heavily used: check that they show no mechanical play or loose contact when plugged in. Testing each input (S/PDIF, TOS-Link, AES-EBU) helps ensure the internal selection relays show no oxidation, which can cause dropouts or intermittent noise. It is also worth listening carefully to the boosted output mode, which places greater demand on the conversion stage, to detect any hiss or channel imbalance.
