Description
The Tim-Extrem is the interconnect that crowns the catalogue of Absolue Créations, developed after the UL-TIM range, of which it forms the continuation. Its role is simple to state: to carry the analogue signal between a source and a preamplifier, or between a preamplifier and a power amplifier, without the chain suffering as a result. It is available in two terminations, unbalanced RCA or balanced XLR, depending on the connectivity of the components to be linked.
The design rests on the combination of three materials claimed by the manufacturer: silver for the conductors, PTFE for the insulation and rhodium for the contacts. Silver is the most conductive metal used in audio; PTFE, a very low-loss dielectric, limits the energy stored and then released by the insulator; rhodium, hard and little prone to oxidation, stabilises over time the contact point with the terminals, where much of an analogue link's degradation occurs. The cable is available in graduated lengths, with a thirty-centimetre step beyond the highest standard length, allowing the connection to be adjusted to the actual layout of the system rather than coiling up surplus cable behind the furniture.
This type of cable is aimed at a listener whose system is already settled, with electronics and speakers chosen, and who is looking to extract the last measure of definition and coherence from it. It finds its place in high-end systems where the interconnect is no longer a mere accessory but a component in its own right, and where the listener has the necessary experience to perceive what such a level of implementation brings.

What to check before buying used
On an interconnect cable, inspection focuses first on the connectors: an RCA plug whose locking ring has been forced, or an XLR with a pushed-in contact, compromises the connection regardless of the conductor. Check that the sheath shows no pinching or marked bending near the cable exits, an area where the silver strands fatigue first, and that the rhodium plating on the contacts is intact and not pitted. A continuity check channel by channel, along with careful listening for crackling while handling the plug, will settle any doubt within a few minutes. Finally, make sure that the length of the model on offer matches your layout, as this type of cable is made to order.
