Description
The Reference Stand from Acoustic Energy is a speaker stand designed as a fully-fledged element of the hi-fi chain, rather than a simple height-adjustment accessory. It serves as a linking platform between the speaker and the floor, with the aim of preserving the tonal balance of the driver rather than constraining it.
The design seeks a compromise between two usual approaches to speaker stands: rigid, lightweight models, which favour liveliness but can reduce bass foundation, and heavy models, which reinforce the bass but can dull the treble rendering. The Reference Stand aims for a balance between these two tendencies.
The stand is supplied with isolation pads intended to ensure coupling between the speaker and the top plate, without resorting to spikes that would mark the furniture or floor. The top plate measures 144 x 209 mm, while the bottom plate reaches a maximum dimension of 650 x 235 x 300 mm. The stand stands 650 mm tall excluding spikes and weighs 7.5 kg per unit.
This stand is aimed at users of compact or bookshelf speakers wishing to position them at a suitable listening height, within a carefully considered stereo or home cinema setup where the mechanical stability and neutrality of the stand play a role in the final sound.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the original isolation pads supplied beneath the top plate: if compressed, hardened or missing, they degrade coupling with the speaker and throw off the intended tonal balance. Also inspect the bottom plate and the spike threads for any play, corrosion or cracks in the column, as well as the overall plumb of the stand once assembled. Any mismatch in colour or finish between the two units of a pair, often resold separately, should also be checked.
