Description
The A10 Classic is a stereo integrated amplifier from Advance Paris, designed with a hybrid architecture that combines an ECC81 and 12AT7 valve preamplifier with a transistor power stage operating in class AB. This configuration allows a pair of speakers to be driven directly without a separate power amplifier, while retaining the sonic colouration characteristic of valves at the front end of the chain.
The power stage delivers 2x130 W into 8 ohms, with a stated frequency response of 20 Hz to 80 kHz, a harmonic distortion rate of less than 0.006% at 1 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 98 dB. A High Bias switch, located on the rear panel, allows class A biasing to be activated over the first watts of the power stage, which alters the sonic behaviour at low listening levels. The power supply relies on a toroidal transformer, and digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by an AKM AK4490 DAC compatible with 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD 11.2 MHz.
The connectivity is particularly extensive for an integrated amplifier: five unbalanced analogue inputs on RCA, an MM phono input with three capacitance settings (100, 200, 320 pF), a balanced XLR input, as well as five digital inputs comprising three optical inputs, a coaxial S/PDIF input and a USB audio input. Two HDMI sockets, one of which is ARC-compatible, can be enabled from the configuration menu to integrate the A10 into a home cinema system or to connect a DVD player. A USB-A port also allows playback of MP3 files from a USB stick or portable player, while a dedicated connector optionally accommodates an aptX Bluetooth receiver from the XFTB01 or XFTB02 range.
The amplifier also offers a speaker selection of A, B or A+B, loudness, bass and treble controls with a by-pass function, an automatic standby feature adjustable from 5 to 90 minutes, as well as a trigger input/output for remotely switching on other devices connected via minijack. Two subwoofer outputs and a fixed Rec Out output dedicated to a recorder complete the package, alongside a front-panel headphone output.
This type of amplifier is aimed at audiophiles seeking a versatile stereo system, capable of accommodating a turntable fitted with an MM cartridge as well as modern digital sources or a television via HDMI ARC. Its rich feature set makes it a central hub for an expandable hi-fi system, potentially including one or two subwoofers.

What to check before buying used
The ECC81 and 12AT7 valves in the preamplifier wear over time: checking the gain, any unusual hum or distorted sound at low volume helps assess their condition, bearing in mind that they remain replaceable consumables. The coupling capacitor and the inductors in the transistor power stage also warrant inspection after several years of use. Finally, the High Bias switch and all connectivity, particularly the HDMI inputs and the AKM DAC, should be tested to rule out any contact faults or signal recognition issues.
