Description
The A12 Classic is a stereo integrated amplifier from Advance Paris, designed around a hybrid architecture combining a valve preamplifier with a transistor power stage. It centralises all the sources of a hi-fi and video system thanks to extensive connectivity, without requiring a separate power amplifier.
The heart of the unit is built around an ECC81/12AT7 valve preamplifier coupled with a 2x270W push-pull amplifier in class AB, a configuration intended to combine the sonic texture typical of valves with the vigour of a high-power transistor stage. A High Bias switch, located at the rear, allows class A bias to be activated on the first watts of the power stage, which favours linearity at low listening levels. Functions are managed by a microprocessor controlled from a single central encoder, with access to menus via a short or long press. The unit also features two HDMI inputs, including one HDMI ARC input compatible with CEC to control switching on and off in conjunction with a television, as well as automatic standby management adjustable from 5 to 90 minutes.
The connectivity covers both digital and analogue sources: coaxial and optical inputs, USB type A and B with an X-MOS module, RCA and XLR inputs, as well as an MM/MC phono input for a turntable. Two subwoofer outputs, adjustable separately on the preamplifier or the amplifier, along with a fixed Rec Out output for a recorder, complete the set. A Main In input also allows the unit to be used as a standalone power amplifier.
This amplifier is aimed at enthusiasts seeking a complete and versatile stereo system, capable of accommodating a turntable as well as a digital source or a television via HDMI ARC, with the option of adding one or two subwoofers depending on the listening setup.

What to check before buying used
On a hybrid amplifier like this one, it is worth checking the condition of the preamplifier's ECC81/12AT7 valves, as wear can result in a loss of dynamics or increased noise; however, they remain simple and accessible to replace. It is also worth testing the High Bias switch as well as the A/B speaker selector, which can develop poor contacts over time. Checking that the central encoder and the various inputs, particularly the HDMI and phono inputs, are working properly ensures that no function has been affected by use.
