Description
The DX1 Smart Line belongs to Advance Paris's Smart range. It is a digital-to-analogue converter which, depending on the settings chosen, also functions as a preamplifier or as a headphone amplifier. This versatility makes it a central unit capable of receiving several digital sources and driving a power amplifier or headphones directly, without any intermediate electronics.
The DAC processes PCM signals up to 768 kHz in 32 bit, as well as DSD from DSD64 (2.8 MHz) up to DSD256 (11.2 MHz). Conversion relies on an AKM4490 circuit, combined with the Velvet Sound concept, which merges technical measurements and listening tests to optimise the sound. Signal synchronisation is handled by an electronic circuit rather than a conventional quartz crystal, an approach presented as more precise.
The digital connectivity is particularly extensive: six optical S/PDIF inputs, three coaxial inputs including one BNC, one AES input on XLR, two USB inputs (one USB A for an Apple device, one USB B for a computer), and the option of adding aptX Bluetooth via the optional X-FTB01 adaptor. Line outputs are available in Cinch and balanced XLR, complemented by two headphone outputs on 3.5 mm jack. A single rotary encoder, combined with a standby push button, allows selection of inputs, adjustment of line or headphone output volume, and navigation through the menus, with visual feedback on the display screen at every action.

What to check before buying used
The AKM4490 circuit and the power supply stage do not cope well with power surges: testing the various digital inputs (optical, coaxial, AES, USB) is essential to rule out any silent port or suspicious background noise. Also check the headphone socket and the XLR output, as well as the proper operation of the wheel or the front panel buttons, which are often used on this versatile unit. If the X-FTB01 Bluetooth adaptor is sold with the unit, confirm that it pairs correctly.
