Description
The PlayStream A1 from Advance Paris is a network-enabled integrated amplifier, designed to centralise digital and analogue sources within a single hi-fi system. It features an Ethernet and Wi-Fi network player capable of accessing streaming services as well as a music library stored on a smartphone, tablet, computer or NAS.
Its amplification section delivers 2 x 52 W into 6 ohms in class AB, with a stated frequency response of 20 Hz to 80 kHz, total harmonic distortion below 0.004% at 1 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of 98 dB. The output impedance is 10 kohms. High-Bias operation aims to bring the sonic behaviour closer to that of a class A stage over the first watts of power, a point that mainly affects rendering at low listening levels.
The connectivity combines digital inputs (two optical, one coaxial, one HDMI ARC port) with analogue inputs, including three RCA inputs and one configurable phono input. There is also a 6.5 mm headphone output, a line/variable output, two SUB OUT outputs and an RJ45 Ethernet port. The built-in tuner covers digital DAB+ reception and FM.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a user who wishes to bring together network streaming, digital radio and a phono source in a single unit, without adding extra boxes. The presence of a configurable phono input and subwoofer outputs makes it a relevant choice for a system combining a turntable, passive speakers and possibly a subwoofer.

What to check before buying used
The motorised potentiometer and input switches may develop crackling noises after several years without regular use: a test across the full volume range and on each source is advisable. The network module (Ethernet/Wi-Fi) should be checked for proper operation, as some firmware updates may no longer be available depending on the age of the unit. It is also worth checking that the phono input shows no hum or distortion, and ensuring that the inductors and capacitors in the power stage have not suffered from prolonged storage.
