Description
The PlayStream A5 from Advance Paris is a network-connected integrated amplifier, designed to combine power amplification and music streaming in a single unit. It is aimed at the audiophile who wishes to combine sound quality with direct access to modern digital sources, without adding extra boxes to their system.
Its amplification section delivers a power of 2x80W at 8Ω in class AB, complemented by High-Bias technology which increases the bias of the output stages in order to bring the sound rendering of the first watts closer to that of class A operation, renowned for its smoothness and harmonic precision.
On the network connectivity side, the A5 features an Ethernet and Wifi compatible player, giving access to streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer, Qobuz, Tidal, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, vTuner or Napster. It can also play a music library stored on a smartphone, a tablet, a computer or a Synology NAS, making it a central point for an entirely digital setup.
The unit also incorporates a digital DAB+ tuner and an FM tuner, for listening to the radio without going through the internet. Its connectivity includes four digital inputs (one coaxial and three optical), a USB input, as well as six analogue inputs including a configurable phono input, allowing a turntable to be connected directly without an external preamplifier.
The PlayStream A5 is compatible with the Advance Paris X-FTB01 and X-FTB02 Bluetooth receivers, the latter incorporating the high-definition aptX HD codec, for those wishing to add a complementary wireless link to the inputs already present.
This type of amplifier is suited to a hi-fi setup centred on streaming and digital sources, while retaining the ability to listen to vinyl records or classic analogue sources. It is aimed at users who want to simplify their system by avoiding the addition of a separate network player.
What to check before buying used
On this type of connected amplifier, it is best to check that the network module still connects correctly via Wifi and Ethernet and that it correctly recognises the streaming services, as some older firmware is no longer updated. The volume potentiometers and selectors may develop crackling or intermittent contact with age, so should be tested throughout their full range. A check of DAB+/FM reception and the condition of the capacitors in the class AB power stage is also recommended to rule out any humming or emerging distortion.
