Description
The PX1 Smart Line is a stereophonic preamplifier designed by Advance Paris around a dual mono architecture: two monophonic preamplifiers housed within a single chassis, each powered by its own EI-type transformer shielded with mumetal plates. It occupies the central role of a high fidelity system, handling the selection and processing of all connected sources before they are sent on to amplification.
The unit brings together nine analogue inputs, including one balanced input and one phono input configurable as MM or MC at dual level, with adjustable cartridge capacitance. On the digital side, it offers three optical inputs, one coaxial input, one asynchronous XMOS-type USB B input and a USB A input, with conversion handled by a Wolfson WM8740 converter. A proprietary port also allows for the addition of the X-FTB01 direct path Bluetooth adapter. The signal can be processed according to two selectable output topologies within the menu: a 'Class A' mode, based on bipolar transistors in a double cascode arrangement biased in class A, and a 'discrete' mode, with a JFET differential stage at input and output biased in class AB. Navigation is via a single rotary control with push function, giving access to input selection, volume, bass and treble tone controls, balance, loudness and disabling of the automatic standby after thirty minutes of inactivity.
The outputs comprise a balanced XLR output, an unbalanced Cinch output, a recording output (Rec Out), a high-pass output and two subwoofer outputs. The PX1 also incorporates, on the underside of the unit, dual independent settings for two headphones, with adjustable gain (+6, 0, -4 dB) and output impedance (0 or 100 Ω).
This preamplifier is aimed at a hi-fi enthusiast wishing to centralise a variety of sources, turntable, digital sources, computer or USB device, within a single versatile unit, with the option of switching between two sound signatures according to listening preference.
What to check before buying used
On this type of preamplifier with built-in phono input, it is worth checking that the MM/MC selector and capacitance setting function correctly, as well as confirming the absence of noise or crackling from the rotary control knob after several years of use. The digital inputs, particularly the asynchronous USB B port, are worth testing with an active source to confirm stable recognition. The headphone output, with its dual gain and impedance settings, is also worth trying with two different headphones before purchase.
