Description
The X-A160 EVO is a stereo power amplifier from Advance Paris, designed to complement a preamplifier within a separates system. It shares the power architecture of the MAA 1000 with identical transistors, while benefiting from a revised power supply and updated presentation.
The unit is built around a compartmentalised chassis that isolates the various internal circuits in order to limit interactions and parasitic radiation between stages. The power supply relies on a 700 W toroidal transformer, paired with high-current power transistors referenced NJW0281G and NJW0302G, designed to deliver demanding dynamics even during complex musical passages.
The X-A160 EVO delivers 160 W RMS per channel into 8 ohms, and up to 240 W RMS into 4 ohms, allowing it to drive relatively current-hungry speakers. A switch on the rear panel allows the amplifier to operate in class A for the first watts, before automatically switching to class AB beyond that threshold: a compromise between the sound quality sought in class A and the efficiency required for higher power levels. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 80 kHz, with an input impedance of 38 kΩ balanced.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking that the class A switch on the rear of the unit works correctly, as well as the condition of the input and speaker output connectors, which are subject to repeated wear from successive connections. Particular attention to the toroidal transformer and the absence of background noise at start-up helps ensure that the power supply has not deteriorated over time. The ageing of the power stage capacitors, a known issue on this type of class A/AB amplifier, should also be checked during testing.
