Description
The X-A220 EVO is a power amplifier from Advance Paris, designed to complete a separates hi-fi system by providing the pure amplification stage, without integrated preamplification. Its chassis, described as ultra rigid and compartmentalised, aims to isolate the various internal circuits from one another in order to limit parasitic radiation between stages.
The unit relies on a 700 watt power transformer paired with high current capacity power transistors, the NJW0281G and NJW0302G. This architecture is designed to offer good responsiveness on transient signals, that is to say the rapid attacks and sudden level variations found for example on percussion or dynamic passages.
A particular feature of this model is that it can operate under two distinct modes. In everyday use, it operates in class AB, a classic compromise between energy efficiency and sound quality. However, a dedicated switch, located on the rear of the unit and named High Bias, allows the amplifier to run in pure class A up to 55 watts. Beyond this power level, switching to class AB occurs automatically, without any intervention from the user.
This type of amplifier is aimed at a listener who already owns a preamplifier or a source with a line level output, and who is looking to isolate the amplification function in order to optimise the thermal management and power supply of their system. The class A mode will particularly appeal to those who favour sonic finesse at low and medium listening power levels.
What to check before buying used
Test the volume potentiometer for any crackling or channel dropout at the end of its travel, a typical sign of wear on this type of power stage. Also check that the High Bias switch on the rear operates correctly, as well as the condition of the power supply capacitors, whose capacitance can decline over the years. A check of the internal ventilation of the compartmentalised chassis is also recommended, as the heat generated in pure class A places a heavy load on surrounding components.
