Description
The X-P1200 is a stereo preamplifier from Advance Paris, built on the principle of two mono preamplifiers combined within a single compartmentalised chassis. This architecture isolates the circuits and preamplification stages of the right and left channels, both in terms of signal processing and power supply, with each channel having its own toroidal transformer.
This complete separation of channels improves crosstalk between channels and enhances the stereo effect during listening. The power supply combines a mains input filtered by chokes and capacitors with a filter made up of four 12,000 µF capacitors rated at 150 V, with regulation provided by integrated circuits mounted on heatsinks. Input and output switching is carried out by relays, without loss of contact, while the balancing and unbalancing of the RCA inputs relies on Burr Brown operational amplifiers.
On the digital side, processing is handled by an Analog Device AD-1955 converter, suited to high-end applications and SACD playback, with a multibit sigma-delta modulator and digital interpolation filters. Playback of audio files from a PC or Mac computer is handled via an XMOS solution through the USB B input. The unit offers a frequency response of 10 Hz to 150 kHz, distortion below 0.01%, a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB or greater, and channel separation of 100 dB or greater.
The X-P1200 has nine analogue inputs, including two balanced XLR inputs, as well as two coaxial digital inputs and two digital inputs, in addition to the USB input. For output, it offers a balanced XLR connection or unbalanced RCA.
This preamplifier is aimed at a hi-fi system built around a separate power amplifier, combining analogue and digital sources, for a user seeking careful stereo separation and quality digital conversion built into the preamplifier.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking the correct operation of the input and output switching relays, the condition of the power supply's filter capacitors given their high capacitance, as well as the behaviour of the two toroidal transformers and the AD-1955 converter when playing digital sources, not forgetting proper recognition of the XMOS USB input by a computer.
