Description
The X-P700 is a stereo preamplifier with dual mono design, intended to drive a separate power amplifier within an audiophile system. It stands out for its choice between two output circuits: a Class A mode based on bipolar transistors in a double-cascade arrangement, evoking the sound of a valve preamplifier, and a more conventional Discrete mode using a JFET differential pair and a bipolar current mirror biased in Class AB.
On the technical side, the unit offers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 45 kHz, distortion below 0.007% and a signal-to-noise ratio above 103 dB, rising to 123 dB in DAC mode. Output level reaches 2 V on RCA and 4 V on XLR, with an impedance of 47 kohms. The digital section houses a Burr Brown PCM1796 24-bit/192 kHz converter, accessible via two Toslink optical inputs, an S/PDIF coaxial input, a USB-B input and a powered USB-A output. On the output side, the X-P700 offers an RCA pair alongside a balanced XLR output, as well as a REC output and two stereo RCA SUB outputs.
The analogue connectivity is particularly generous, with seven stereo RCA line inputs, an XLR line input and an RCA phono input compatible with MM and MC. Two front-panel headphone outputs, in 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm jack formats, are accompanied by independent adjustment of gain (+6, 0, -4 dB) and output impedance (0 or 100 ohms). A proprietary connector also allows for the addition of an optional Bluetooth receiver.

What to check before buying used
Both output stages (Class A and Discrete JFET) rely on matched transistors whose bias can drift over time: a slight hiss or asymmetric distortion between channels should be treated as a warning sign. Check that the switching relays for the multiple RCA inputs are working properly, as these can sometimes develop intermittent contact issues after many cycles. Also test each headphone output and the PCM1796 DAC section, whose coupling capacitors may age prematurely on a unit left powered on for long periods.
