Description

The K171 is a closed-back supra-aural headphone by AKG, designed for professional use in studio monitoring, radio and DJing. Its closed-back design limits sound leakage to the outside and provides isolation from ambient noise, allowing you to work on an audio signal without interference from the listening environment.

It features dynamic transducers with an impedance of 55 Ω and a sensitivity of 94 dB/mW, a combination that allows it to be driven without particularly powerful dedicated headphone amplification. Its frequency response extends from 18 Hz to 26 kHz, with harmonic distortion below 0.4%, ensuring clean sound reproduction across the entire audible spectrum and beyond.

The cable ends in a gold-plated mini-jack, supplied with a screw-on 6.35 mm adapter, handy for switching from a studio console to a portable player or a mixing desk. Weighing 200 g, it remains lightweight for extended use during monitoring or mixing sessions.

These headphones are aimed at demanding professionals and enthusiasts looking for a reliable monitoring tool: sound engineers, radio technicians, DJs, or anyone needing isolated, neutral listening to judge a mix or a recording without excessive colouration.

What to check before buying used

The K171's earpads and headband padding, made of faux leather, tend to crack or flatten over the years: check their suppleness and the absence of cracks, though these foams remain replaceable. Also check the sliding headband's mobility and the condition of the plastic yoke at the earcup anchor points, an area known to weaken with use. Finally, test each channel separately and flex the cable at its junction with the headphones to detect any loose contact.
