The ALF40 is a passive bass amplifier by Amina, designed to reinforce the bass of an audio or video system without requiring a dedicated built-in amplifier. It is aimed at those who wish to add body and warmth to music or TV sound, while maintaining a discreet installation, invisible within the room.
Its design is based on a 4th-order band-pass principle, an architecture that allows the unit to deliver a moderate sound level while leaving only a small circular vent visible in the room. This technical approach limits the visual footprint of the subwoofer, an advantage for ceiling or cabinet integration. Filtering and protection circuits are built into the unit, allowing it to be driven directly by a 60 W amplifier delivering full-bandwidth content, with no dedicated amplification stage to manage.
One notable point of the ALF40 is the ability to adjust the position of its port, a feature common to the entire range of Amina subwoofers and bass amplifiers. The ALF40 thus offers two possible port orientations, end-fire or front-fire, allowing the installation to be adapted to the construction constraints of the cabinet or false ceiling into which it is integrated.
This subwoofer is aimed primarily at custom, discreet installations, home cinema or multiroom, where the aesthetics and invisibility of the equipment take precedence over the imposing bulk of a traditional floor-standing subwoofer. What to check before buying used
The port adjustment mechanism, allowing switching between end-fire and front-fire orientation, must slide without play or sticking: a misaligned port alters the band-pass tuning and the output level. Also check the condition of the circular vent and the sealing of the cabinet, as any crack or veneer separation compromises the 4th-order band-pass principle. The connection terminals deserve a visual check, as the ALF40 is driven directly by an external amplifier with no dedicated stage of its own.
