Description
The AM300 Evo is a stereo power amplifier from Atoll electronique, designed with a dual-mono, symmetrical configuration. It can be used in classic stereo mode or bridged to mono using a switch located on the rear panel, provided two units are used for this latter configuration. This versatility makes it a power amplifier capable of adapting to power-hungry systems.
Each channel is built around six MOS-FET transistors arranged in symmetrical discrete-component stages, biased in class A/B and current-stabilised by a proprietary system. In stereo, the amplifier delivers 2x150 W RMS into 8 Ω and 2x280 W RMS into 4 Ω; in bridged mono mode into 8 Ω, output reaches 500 W. The power supply relies on two 440 VA toroidal transformers and a total capacitive reserve of 83,600 μF, reflecting an ability to respond without faltering to transient current demands. Bandwidth extends from 5 Hz to 200 kHz, with a rise time of 1.5 μs, distortion at 1 kHz of 0.005%, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB, all indicators of accurate, low-coloration reproduction. The input impedance of 220 kΩ and sensitivity of 1.7 V determine its compatibility with the source driving it.
Connectivity includes a stereo line input, a stereo XLR input, a stereo line output, a stereo speaker output, a 12 V Trigger input, as well as bridged-mono and line/XLR switches. Internal wiring between the motherboard and speaker outputs uses silver-plated oxygen-free pure copper with Teflon insulation, while the speaker output terminals are made of gold-plated solid copper. The low-ESR filter capacitors and polypropylene film coupling capacitors were subject to dedicated selection.
This type of amplifier is aimed at enthusiasts of high-end hi-fi systems seeking a substantial power reserve, whether to drive current-hungry speakers or, with two units, to build a dedicated mono power stage for each channel. The 1.5 mm sheet-metal chassis and 8 mm aluminium front panel reflect a construction designed for this type of use.

What to check before buying used
The volume potentiometer deserves testing across its full range: crackling or a level difference between the two channels indicates wear that should be treated with contact cleaner. Also check the condition of the power supply capacitors, stressed by the two toroidal transformers, as well as the proper operation of the mono/stereo switch on the rear panel. Inspecting the speaker terminals and RCA connectors, sometimes oxidised on a lightly used unit, completes the inspection.
