Description
The Stereo MKII is a stereo power amplifier designed by Brinkmann Audio to reproduce the entire musical spectrum, from the deepest bass to the finest treble, with constant control over the speakers it drives. It reflects the brand's philosophy, which aims to approach the ideal of a "straight wire with gain", that is, an amplifier that neither alters nor colours the signal it amplifies.
Its power supply relies on a transformer capable of delivering up to 1500 watts of peak power, paired with four capacitors totalling 132 millifarads of capacitance. This energy reserve is intended to guarantee stable performance from the amplifier in the face of sudden current demands, particularly during dynamic musical passages. The driver stage is fully balanced, which contributes to noise control and the precision of the signal transmitted to the output stage.
The output stage adopts a so-called "Diamond" topology, which allows a low output impedance to be maintained across the entire frequency spectrum and range of phase angles, without resorting to global feedback. Four high-performance Sanken transistors are fixed directly to the output terminals, which shortens the signal path as much as possible and allows for a particularly compact chassis.
This type of amplifier is aimed at users with demanding speakers, capable of reproducing the full spectrum at realistic levels, and seeking a dedicated power amplifier rather than an integrated unit. It will suit a high-end system where the source and preamplifier are already sorted, and where the power stage simply needs to pass the signal through without distorting it.
What to check before buying used
The volume potentiometer is worth testing across its full range, checking for crackling or an imbalance between the two channels, a classic symptom of ageing contacts. The four capacitors in the power supply, called upon to deliver the stated energy reserve, lose capacitance over time: a drop in dynamic performance or humming at idle should raise concern. It is also worth checking the condition of the Sanken transistors and their mounting on the heatsink, as well as the cleanliness of the input and speaker output connectors.
