Description
The V80SE is a tube integrated amplifier from Octave Audio, designed to provide both preamplification and power amplification within a single chain. It delivers a continuous power output of 2x70 W into 4 ohms, allowing it to drive a pair of speakers directly without any additional stage.
The circuit is built around four KT150 pentode power tubes, paired with a feedback system intended to ensure operating stability. The frequency response extends from 10 Hz to 80 kHz at 70 W, with a tolerance of ± 0.5 dB, while total harmonic distortion remains below 0.1% at 10 W into 4 ohms. What to check before buying used
The KT150 tubes, consumable items by nature, should be checked for matching and wear: a mismatched or worn set results in a loss of power or increased distortion on one channel. It is also worth checking the condition of the screw terminals and RCA/XLR sockets, which can become oxidised or loose after several years of use, as well as the absence of any hum at idle, which would indicate an ageing filter capacitor. The Octave Black Box power connector deserves a contact test, as this proprietary connection is more sensitive than a standard mains cable.
