Description
The IN 300 Evolution is a stereo integrated amplifier designed and manufactured in France by Atoll Electronique. It combines a preamplification stage and a power stage within a single chassis, along with a built-in digital-to-analogue converter, allowing it to accept both analogue and digital sources without any external conversion stage.
The internal design is based on a dual mono architecture, with two 440 VA toroidal transformers paired with a third 10 VA transformer dedicated to the control electronics. This separation of power supplies, combined with a current storage capacity of 86,150 µF, aims to limit interaction between the two channels and provide a substantial energy reserve to cope with transient current demands. The stated power output reaches 2x260 W into 4 ohms, a level that allows for driving speakers with a low impedance or a reactive load. The harmonic distortion rate of 0.05% and the signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB reflect a design carefully considered in terms of background noise and linearity. The bandwidth extends from 5 Hz to 100 kHz, well beyond the audible spectrum, while the input impedance of 220 kohms and the sensitivity of 100 mV make it easier to pair with a variety of sources.
The digital section features Asahi Kasei AK4490 and Burr Brown PCM5102 converters, controlled by an XMOS USB controller, with optical and coaxial inputs accepting streams up to 24-bit/192 kHz, an asynchronous USB input and a Bluetooth input. On the analogue connectivity side, the unit offers five RCA inputs (including an optional phono card), one XLR input, a tape-out output, two RCA pre-out outputs as well as a 3.5 mm jack headphone output on the front panel. The 8 mm steel chassis, the motorised volume control potentiometer and the remote control supplied as standard round off this package.
This model is aimed at a hi-fi enthusiast who already owns a current-demanding speaker or who wishes to simplify their setup by centralising digital and analogue sources around a single unit. The presence of a headphone output and multiple inputs also make it a suitable hub for personal listening or an evolving system, with the option of adding a phono card at a later stage for a turntable.

What to check before buying used
On this dual mono integrated amplifier, check for the absence of hum or crackling on the volume and balance potentiometers, as well as the cleanliness of the protection relays on start-up. Checking the condition of the filtering capacitors (86,150 µF combined) and the two 440 VA toroidal transformers is recommended after several years of use. Also check that the built-in digital-to-analogue converter and all inputs, both analogue and digital, are working properly.
