Description
The Sonos Amp is a network amplifier designed to integrate classic wired speakers into a Sonos multiroom system. It allows you to connect a turntable, a stereo system or passive speakers in order to listen to vinyl records, CDs and stored audio files, alongside streaming services controlled from the Sonos app, AirPlay or the app of your chosen music service.
The unit features threaded connections for the left and right channels, at a standard diameter: the original plugs can be removed to use your own banana plugs. An HDMI input allows it to be connected to a television via a standard HDMI cable, or via an optical audio adaptor for televisions without HDMI ARC. At the rear, a simplified set of ports makes installation and cable management easier. The casing, designed to fit into a rack, incorporates a heat sink intended to optimise heat management.
The Sonos Amp can also power in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, stand-mounted speakers, or outdoor models to extend listening to the garden. Paired with a TV, it delivers stereo sound for films, series and video games, and can be complemented by a pair of wireless Sonos speakers for a home cinema setup.
This model is aimed at those who already own wired, in-wall or outdoor speakers and wish to integrate them into a connected multiroom system, without starting afresh with an entirely wireless installation. It is suited both to living room use in front of the television and to sound distribution across several zones of the house, including outdoors.
What to check before buying used
On this type of connected amplifier, it is best to check that the threaded terminals for the left and right channels are intact, as the original plugs are often removed for banana plugs and can leave the thread damaged or loose. The heat sink at the rear should be clean and unobstructed, as excessive build-up of dust may indicate intensive use in a poorly ventilated cabinet. An extended power-on test also helps to ensure that heat management does not trigger unwanted standby mode.
