Description
The ADL Cruise is a portable headphone amplifier from ADL By Furutech, designed as the high-end variant of the same brand's Stride model. It allows a headphone to be powered by dedicated electronics, whether from the output of a portable player via its 3.5 mm jack line input, or directly from a computer via its USB input, providing more accurate reproduction than a simple built-in headphone output.
Its difference compared to the Stride lies first in its construction: an aluminium casing covered in carbon combined with stainless steel side panels, the whole assembly offering superior rigidity to that of the standard model. The USB input (mini-B) accepts files up to 24 bit/96 kHz, allowing playback of high-resolution audio sources from a computer, for example via an ADL Formula 2 USB cable (not included). The unit can also be connected to an iPod using an i-D30PS cable (not included). The internal circuits, of high quality, are gold-plated.
The volume potentiometer, located on the same side panel as the 3.5 mm jack inputs and outputs, offers precise listening adjustment. The ADL Cruise accepts a wide range of headphone impedances, from 12 to 600 ohms, allowing it to work with in-ear headphones as well as more demanding over-ear headphones.
This amplifier is aimed at a mobile user wishing to improve the sound of their portable player or laptop with demanding headphones, without relying on a fixed setup. Its 80-hour battery life makes it a suitable companion for prolonged daily use, with the option to keep listening to music while charging.
What to check before buying used
The volume potentiometer, used at every listening session, should turn without crackling or dead spots, otherwise a channel imbalance may occur. Also check the USB mini-B connector, more fragile than current USB-C sockets, as well as the 3.5 mm headphone input and output jacks, whose mechanical retention may loosen over time. The condition of the casing's carbon finish deserves close inspection, as impacts can cause chips that are difficult to repair.
