Description
The Marley MKII is a headphone amplifier from M2Tech, designed to get the best out of headphones, from in-ear models to the most high-end headphones. It does not simply amplify a signal: it features a genuine dual stereo architecture allowing two headphones to be connected and driven simultaneously, each with its own independent volume control.
Its amplification stage runs in pure Class A, with discrete components, which translates into sound described as clear with a low background noise level. The unit can deliver up to 8 Vrms in unbalanced mode, via a standard 6.35 mm jack, or up to 16 Vrms in balanced mode, via a 4-pin XLR connector. This balanced mode, activated by a dedicated relay function, provides a gain of 6 dB SPL and a noticeable improvement in sound quality for headphones compatible with this type of drive.
In terms of connectivity, the Marley MKII offers two inputs with tape output, an auxiliary input for a high-current signal, as well as a preamplifier output allowing an external power amplifier to be driven. This versatility makes it both a standalone headphone amplifier and a preamplifier that can be integrated into a wider system.
This model is aimed at demanding audiophiles who wish to make full use of the potential of high-end headphones, including those fitted with balanced cabling. What to check before buying used
On this dual-output headphone amplifier, test the balanced/unbalanced switching relay, which can oxidise or lose its crisp click with age. Also check for the absence of background noise, hiss or crackling in the independent volume potentiometers, which would indicate dirty components. The 6.35 mm and 4-pin XLR jacks should also be checked, as these multiple connectors are the first points prone to poor contact.
