Description
The Anthem MDX16 is a multizone distribution amplifier designed to drive up to 8 independent listening zones from a single unit. It is aimed at audio installations spread across several rooms, where each zone can receive its own source, its own settings and its own speaker configuration, without relying on separate amplifiers.
Its power is spread across 16 channels, each delivering 60 Watts RMS into 8 ohms or 120 Watts RMS into 4 ohms, with a stated frequency response of 10 Hz to 20 kHz (± 0.5 dB). Each zone has its own tone controls, with bass and treble adjustment of ± 6 dB, as well as level balancing of ± 10 dB. Anthem Room Correction (ARC) can be applied independently to each zone, allowing sound reproduction to be tailored to the specific acoustic characteristics of each room. Per-zone bass management also allows the subwoofer's crossover frequency, level, phase and polarity to be adjusted.
Digital and analogue matrix switching allows any input (analogue RCA, digital coaxial or optical) to be assigned to any output, configurable via a web interface or controllable in real time via IP commands. The digital-to-analogue converter supports PCM streams up to 24-bit / 192 kHz. The unit also features advanced load monitoring and an automatic trigger power mode.
This type of amplifier is aimed at multi-room audio installations, custom system integrators or private individuals wishing to centralise sound distribution across several zones without multiplying the number of units. Its extensive connectivity and input-output matrix allow for bespoke configurations, in both residential and semi-professional installations.

What to check before buying used
On a multizone distribution amplifier such as the MDX16, test each of the 8 zones and 16 speaker output channels to rule out any faulty stage, as heavy multiroom use can wear certain channels more than others. Check that ARC calibration (micro USB and software) works properly, along with the analogue and digital input switching matrix. Also check the condition of the RCA connectors, trigger outputs and Ethernet port, which are heavily used by the numerous connections of an installation spread across several rooms.
