Description
The MRX-740 8K is an 11.2 preamplifier A/V receiver from Anthem, fitted with 7 channels of amplification. It supports the object-based audio formats Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced, and can drive up to 15.2 channels in a pre-amplified configuration. It serves as the heart of a home cinema system, capable of both powering the main speakers and driving a wider multichannel setup via its pre-out outputs.
Each channel delivers 140 watts of continuous power into 8 ohms, enough to drive bookshelf speakers as well as more demanding floorstanding speakers. The unit features Anthem's ARC (Anthem Room Correction) technology in its Genesis version, paired with a redesigned calibration microphone for more accurate measurement of the room's acoustics. On the video side, it incorporates an HDMI v2.1 upgrade compatible with 8K, with 4:4:4 subsampling, HDR handling, Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log Gamma, for uncompromising image transmission up to the latest Ultra HD resolutions.
Connectivity includes 7 HDMI inputs and 3 outputs (one of which is eARC), 2 coaxial S/PDIF inputs, 3 optical Toslink inputs and one output, as well as 5 analogue stereo RCA inputs and 2 outputs (one of which is zone 2). There is also a set of 11.2 pre-out outputs, an IR input, trigger inputs and outputs, an RS-232 port, a WiFi antenna socket, an RJ-45 port and a front-panel headphone output. Network functions include Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Roon and Spotify Connect, along with Anthem's own web-based user interface.
This receiver is aimed at those wishing to equip a home cinema room or media room with a complete multichannel system, capable of integrating a recent television or projector thanks to its HDMI 2.1 inputs and support for the latest video standards. It will be particularly suited to installations where acoustic calibration quality and connectivity flexibility are paramount, especially for configurations going beyond simple stereo or 5.1.

What to check before buying used
On this type of multichannel amplifier-preamplifier, test each HDMI input one by one: a damaged port or a faulty eARC module is common after several years of intensive use. Also check that the ARC calibration works correctly and that the supplied microphone is recognised, as well as the firmness of all speaker and RCA connectors at the rear, which can sometimes be weakened by repeated plugging and unplugging. A check of the ventilation and absence of overheating at the heatsink is also recommended, as the power delivered across 7 channels generates a significant amount of heat.
