Description
The NeXXus Essential belongs to Atacama's family of speaker stands. Its function is simple but decisive: to bring a speaker up to the chosen listening height and isolate it from the floor, so that the furniture or flooring does not colour the sound. Available in numerous heights, it suits both a compact speaker positioned at ear height and low-level use beneath a larger speaker.
Its construction relies on thick steel, assembled using high-strength fixings: the whole remains solid and rigid over time, which limits micro-movements of the stand under the vibrations of the speaker. The top plate is made from 4 mm thick steel, a figure that matters: the more substantial the plate, the less it behaves like a membrane liable to vibrate under the cabinet placed on it.
The central column is hollow and designed to take a filling. Atacama offers its Atabites for this purpose, the benefit of which is felt mainly in the lower part of the spectrum: the added mass lowers the centre of gravity and damps the structure, resulting in tighter bass. Filling is optional, but it is what distinguishes a merely stable stand from a truly inert one.
Several heights are available, from 20 cm to 100 cm, with the 50 and 60 cm formats offered as standard, along with an option for a widened plate measuring 190 x 305 mm to accommodate speakers with a larger footprint.
This stand is aimed at the listener who owns a compact speaker and wishes to achieve the correct geometry, with the tweeter aligned to the ear, rather than placing it on an improvised piece of furniture. It is just as suitable for a living room stereo system as for rear surround speakers, where the taller heights find their use.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, a few points deserve attention and are specific to this type of product. Check the condition of the steel: stands often spend years in contact with the floor, and corrosion pitting tends to appear first at the base of the column and under the base plate. Then check that the fixings are properly tightened and that there is no play between plate, column and base, as a stand that wobbles loses its entire purpose. Look at whether the column has already been filled: an old filling may have settled or absorbed moisture, and Atabites are not always supplied with a second-hand unit. Finally, make sure the original spikes or feet are present and that the threads on the base are intact, as these deform easily during house moves, and check that the plate dimensions match your speakers' base.
