Description
The VR1-X is an active subwoofer from Atohm, designed to reinforce the bass of a hi-fi or home cinema system. It features a front-firing 23 cm diameter driver paired with a built-in Class D amplification module, the whole housed in a bass-reflex enclosure with a bottom-firing port.
The stated power output reaches 220 W RMS with a 320 W peak, for a frequency response covering 32 Hz to 150 Hz and a sound pressure level of 112 dB measured at 40 Hz. The 27-litre bass-reflex enclosure volume contributes to the low-end extension. Two phase settings are available: an electrical setting (0° or 180°) and a phase adjustment covering the 38 Hz to 150 Hz range, allowing fine-tuning of the subwoofer's integration with the main speakers.
Connectivity combines two stereo high-level speaker inputs and a stereo RCA low-level input, offering a degree of flexibility depending on the source or amplifier used. Automatic power-on completes the feature set.
With dimensions of 320 x 420 x 375 mm and a weight of 21 kg, the VR1-X retains a compact footprint, comparable to that of many sealed subwoofers, while benefiting from the advantages of a bass-reflex design.
This subwoofer is aimed at a hi-fi or home cinema system pairing mid-sized floorstanding speakers or capable bookshelf speakers, where additional bass is sought without disrupting the overall tonal balance.

What to check before buying used
Check the operation of the built-in Class D amplification under sustained load, as an active subwoofer can reveal a faulty thermal protection or abnormal background noise on power-up. Inspect the suspension of the 23 cm driver as well as the seal of the bass-reflex port, since excessive play or a tear would affect the low-end extension. Also test both phase settings and the sensitivity of the automatic input to rule out any crackling potentiometer.
