Description

The Atohm ZEF is a connecting cable designed to link acoustic speakers to an amplifier. It is fitted between the amplifier's output terminals and the speakers' input terminals, replacing an original cable or a generic cable.

Its construction is based on three central OCC copper conductors, a monocrystalline copper known for limiting losses caused by the metal's grain boundaries. These conductors are paired with multi-strand silver-plated UC-OFC copper strands, a combination intended to improve signal conduction across the full spectrum. Each conductor's insulation is provided by a fluoropolymer (FEP), a stable insulating material, while the whole assembly is protected by a flexible PVC outer sheath that makes handling and routing the cable easier. The effective cross-section is 2.8 mm², equivalent to a 13 AWG gauge, a conductor diameter suited to typical cable lengths between amplifier and speakers.

This cable is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts wishing to give proper care to the connection between their amplifier and their speakers, in a standard home installation. Its generous cross-section and conductive materials make it a sound choice for systems seeking to limit cable resistance on current-demanding speakers.

What to check before buying used

Check the condition of the connectors (banana, spade or bare wire): oxidation, a loose crimp or a weakened solder joint can degrade contact at the amplifier and speaker terminals. Inspect the PVC sheath along its full length, looking for cracks, cuts or crushing marks, particularly at bending points. A continuity check on the three conductors, along with the absence of any short circuit between strands, remains the best way of confirming that the shielding and FEP insulation have not deteriorated over time.
