Description
The Atohm ZEF Max Set is a speaker cable supplied ready for use, terminated with the brand's silver-plated WT-STU connectors, available in either banana or spade versions. It represents an evolution of the ZEF cable, retaining the same construction principles while raising the conductor cross-section to a higher level.
The construction combines two types of conductors: six OCC copper solid cores at the heart, surrounded by 343 strands of silver-plated UC-OFC copper. This combination brings the total conductor cross-section to 5.2 mm² (10 AWG), with fluoropolymer (FEP) insulation. A conductor cross-section of this size limits the cable's series resistance, which in practice results in better control in the bass register and a more linear response across the entire spectrum, including towards the high frequencies.
This type of cable is intended for high-end installations where every link in the chain is chosen with care, particularly when the distance between the amplifier and the speakers requires long cable runs. In this scenario, the generous conductor cross-section of the ZEF Max comes into its own, as it compensates for the losses that increase with cable length.

What to check before buying used
With this type of cable, attention should focus mainly on the WT-STU connectors: check that the spades or bananas show no play, no signs of oxidation and no loosening at the base of the crimp, which ensures reliable contact with the amplifier and speaker terminals. Also check the condition of the sheath along its full length, particularly at the flex points near the connectors, as split or marked FEP insulation could expose the silver-plated copper strands. A continuity test on each conductor remains the best way to confirm that no strand has been broken by tight folding or prolonged coiled storage.
