Description
The MS120 by Atoll electronique is a network player paired with a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), designed and manufactured in France. It fits into an existing hi-fi system to bring it network streaming functions and dedicated digital-to-analogue conversion, without replacing the amplification already in place.
Conversion is handled by a Burr-Brown PCM1796 DAC, capable of processing files up to 24-bit / 192 kHz as well as DSD64 and DSD128 streams. This compatibility allows high-resolution music libraries to be used without degradation caused by insufficient conversion. The stated signal-to-noise ratio of 123 dB reflects a very low noise floor, ensuring clean reproduction even during the quietest passages, while the output level of 2.8 V RMS allows a downstream amplification stage to be properly driven.
On the network connectivity side, the MS120 reads DLNA/UPnP streams via RJ45 cable as well as Wi-Fi, and includes a Bluetooth 4.2 receiver for streaming from a smartphone or tablet. It is compatible with the main streaming services, including Deezer, Spotify, Tidal and Roon, and features two USB-A ports allowing direct playback from a hard drive or USB stick. Control is via the ATOLL Signature 2 application, available on Android and iOS.
This type of unit is intended for a user who already owns an amplifier or integrated amplifier and wishes to add network streaming capabilities and quality digital conversion, without starting over with an entirely new system. It is particularly suited to those who listen to high-resolution files or DSD and wish to centralise several sources: home network, USB stick, Bluetooth or streaming services.

What to check before buying used
The Bluetooth 4.2 receiver and built-in Wi-Fi module sometimes age less well than the wired inputs: it is best to check their stability under real conditions rather than relying on simple network detection. The USB-A ports deserve an actual playback test, as some connectors lose contact reliability over time. A malfunction of the network card or Bluetooth module may require a software reset, or even a firmware update that can be difficult to find after the range was discontinued.
