Audiolab 8300A

The Audiolab 8300A is a stereo integrated amplifier, that is to say a unit combining in a single chassis the preamplifier responsible for source selection and level adjustment, and the power stage that drives the speakers. It occupies the central position in a system: sources are connected on one side, speakers on the other, and the whole arrangement operates without any additional link.

Its power section adopts a dual-mono architecture, with each channel having its own amplification circuit in order to limit interaction between the left and right channels. The stated power output is 2 × 75 W into 8 Ω and 2 × 115 W into 4 Ω: this increase as impedance drops indicates an amplifier that does not shy away from speakers whose load becomes demanding in the bass. The 15 A current capacity points in the same direction, as available current governs the ability to control the drivers during transients. The power supply is built around a 300 VA toroidal transformer paired with 60,000 µF of reserve capacitance, which the output stages draw on during level peaks.

On the connectivity side, the 8300A accepts line-level sources, CD, tuner, auxiliary, and offers a balanced XLR input, a format derived from the professional world that has the advantage of rejecting interference picked up along the cable, useful when the run between source and amplifier is long. A phono stage is built in, compatible with both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges: a turntable can be connected directly, whichever cartridge family is chosen, without an external phono preamplifier.

This type of configuration corresponds to a classic stereo installation, where listening is done from physical sources and where vinyl holds a genuine rather than incidental place. The dual MM and MC compatibility notably leaves open the possibility of upgrading the cartridge to a moving coil type without needing to add a further link. The XLR input also opens the door to players and converters fitted with balanced outputs.

When buying a used integrated amplifier, a few checks specific to this type of unit are worthwhile. The volume potentiometer and source selector should be operated through their full range: crackling, level jumps or imbalance between the two channels at the low end point to grime or wear. Each channel should then be listened to separately to ensure both sections of the dual-mono structure behave the same way. The filter capacitors, which are under constant load, are checked indirectly: an audible hum at idle or a hesitant power-up should raise concern. The phono stage should be tested with a turntable, in MM and then MC if possible, since these two sensitivities do not use exactly the same circuits. Finally, the speaker terminals and the XLR and RCA sockets should be inspected, as oxidation or mechanical play degrades the connection, and the chassis should be checked for signs of abnormal heating around the power supply area.
