Description
The M-PWR is a stereo power amplifier from Audiolab, designed in a compact format to pair with a DAC from the same brand, such as the Q-DAC or M-DAC. It provides the final amplification of the audio signal, once it has been converted and prepared upstream by a dedicated digital source.
The unit delivers a power output of 40 watts per channel into 8 ohms. This power, though measured, is presented by Audiolab as sufficient to drive most bookshelf-type speakers, whose sensitivity is often lower than that of floorstanding speakers. The M-PWR offers dual inputs, balanced via XLR connectors and unbalanced via RCA, allowing it to be connected to a DAC as well as to a CD player fitted with a variable-level output, such as the 8200CDQ from the same manufacturer.
The chassis, made of anodised aluminium, shares the same 25.2 cm width as the Q-DAC and M-DAC, designed to form a visually cohesive set once the units are stacked. Two finishes are available, silver or black, allowing the power amplifier to be matched to the rest of the system.
This type of power amplifier is aimed at a user who already owns a DAC or a source with a variable output, and who wishes to add a compact amplification stage rather than a conventional integrated amplifier. It will be particularly suited to a desktop or small living-room setup, paired with bookshelf speakers.

What to check before buying used
On this type of power amplifier, the gain potentiometer should be tested across its full range for crackling or channel imbalance. It is also worth checking the condition of the protection relays and the absence of background noise at idle, a possible sign of ageing capacitors. Checking the XLR and RCA inputs, as well as the speaker terminals, helps ensure no contact is oxidised or loose.
