Description
The Black Beauty is an interconnect cable from AudioQuest, offered in RCA or XLR version depending on the connection needs of the system. It links a source or preamplifier to an amplifier, carrying the analogue audio signal, with particular attention paid to limiting electrical interference likely to affect the sound.
Its design draws on several technical choices specific to AudioQuest. The conductors are made of PSC+ copper (Perfect Surface Copper+), a variant with a treated surface whose laying direction is controlled during manufacture. The cable also includes a carbon/graphene mesh network along with 0.5% silver-plated RF-draining wires, two elements whose role is to carry away radio-frequency noise picked up by the cable before it can disturb the intended signal.
The connectors also play a part in this approach: the plug housings are copper-plated, and the plugs themselves are suspended, silver deposited on red copper. This construction aims for a stable contact interface that is not prone to oxidation over time.
This cable is intended for a hi-fi or home cinema system already fitted with RCA or XLR inputs and outputs, in a setup where the user wants to take care over the connection between their components without opting for an entry-level solution. Its use remains that of a standard interconnect cable, to be fitted between a source, a preamplifier or an amplifier.
What to check before buying used
The RCA or XLR plugs deserve careful checking: internal solder joints and shielding can weaken with repeated handling, causing crackling or channel loss. The outer braiding must show no cuts or crushing, which would expose the RF-draining network and reduce its effectiveness against interference. A continuity test and a check for hum-free operation on both channels, with the cable in its normal working position, remains the best indicator of good condition.
