Description
The Carbon is a digital coaxial cable from AudioQuest, designed to transmit an S/PDIF digital signal between a source (CD player, transport, network box) and a converter or amplifier fitted with a coaxial input. It belongs to a range of cables designed to limit the losses and disturbances that can affect the quality of the transmitted digital stream.
Its conductors are solid, made of 5% silver-plated OFC copper, 21 AWG gauge. The dielectric surrounding them is a nitrogen-injected polyethylene foam, an insulating material intended to preserve signal integrity. The cable features double shielding, combining a foil layer and a silver-plated spiral shield, to limit electromagnetic interference picked up along the length of the cable.
AudioQuest has also incorporated its proprietary NDS (Noise-Dissipation System) technology, made up of five layers of carbon, designed to dissipate radio-frequency noise (RFI) before it reaches the conductors. The plugs are metal, with high-purity silver-plated copper contacts, and are cold-crimped onto the cable rather than soldered.
This cable is aimed at users of a hi-fi or home cinema system with a coaxial digital link between a source and a DAC, an amplifier or a preamplifier, who are looking for a carefully engineered transmission on this type of connection.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking the condition of the metal plugs and the cold-crimped connections, which can weaken with repeated handling, as well as the integrity of the jacket and shielding along the full length of the cable, particularly at the flex points near the connectors.
