Description
The Hurricane is a mains cable from AudioQuest, intended to power the components of a hi-fi or home cinema system. It replaces the power cord originally supplied with an appliance, with the aim of improving the quality of the electrical supply delivered to audio and video circuits.
AudioQuest starts from the observation that the AC power distributed by the mains grid was never designed to meet the demands of today's high-resolution audio-video equipment. The noise present at the source is further compounded by radio-frequency interference picked up by the power cord itself, then transmitted to the appliances' power supplies and the circuit ground. This phenomenon can result in distortion and losses of low-level signal, an effect sometimes referred to as sonic masking.
The Hurricane is intended for use where a standard power cord, or even a conventional mains conditioner, shows its limits. AudioQuest positions this cable as a response to these electrical noise phenomena, for installations where the user seeks to optimise every link in their system, including the power supply.
What to check before buying used
On a high-end mains cable such as the Hurricane, attention should focus on the plugs (wall and IEC): check for any play, signs of overheating or marked pins, indicating firm contact use by the previous owner. Also examine the sheath along its full length for pronounced creases, cuts or crush marks that could indicate damage to the internal shielding. A cable that has travelled a lot within a rack warrants a continuity test before final installation.
