Description
The Monsoon is a mains power cable from AudioQuest, designed to replace the cord originally supplied with an audio or video device. It terminates at one end in an earthed Schuko plug, and at the other in a three-pin IEC-C13 connector, the standard format for connecting an amplifier, a player or any other electronic equipment.
Its construction relies on semi-rigid concentric conductors, made up of 63% Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) and 37% Long-Grain Copper (LGC). This combination aims to limit irregularities in the metal's structure that can disrupt current flow. The drain conductors are themselves silver-plated, a treatment intended to reduce distortion of the electrical signal delivered to the connected device.
The concentric-strand geometry helps maintain the cable's consistency along its entire length, a point that high-end cable manufacturers work on particularly to stabilise the power supplied to the sensitive stages of an audio system.

What to check before buying used
Check the flexibility of the sheath and the absence of pronounced kinks near the plugs, areas where the concentric strands can fatigue over time. Inspect the IEC-C13 connector and the Schuko plug: the contacts should remain firm, with no play or signs of heating, and the shielding of the silver-plated drains should not be exposed at the connector exits. A cable that has undergone repeated pulling or overly tight coiling may have an internal break that is invisible from the outside, which should be tested with an actual connection before purchase.
