Description
The NRG Thunder is a mains power cable from AudioQuest, designed to connect hi-fi or home cinema equipment to the wall socket. It fits into a logic of improving the electrical chain upstream of the equipment, rather than the audio signal itself.
Its distinctive feature lies in the combination of two types of solid-core conductors: very pure long-grain copper (LGC) and PSC (Perfect-Surface Copper), also very pure. This combination aims to limit the interaction between the conducting strands, a phenomenon identified as a source of transient intermodulation distortion, which can cause listening fatigue over time.
LGC copper is said to produce a clearer and more uniform rendering than standard OFHC (Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity) copper, while PSC copper, particularly smooth and pure, helps further reduce harshness and improve clarity, even compared with other high-end coppers such as OCC or 8N.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the connectors (mains plug and IEC): pins not oxidised, good mechanical retention and no play on insertion, as an imperfect contact here negates the whole benefit of the cable. Also inspect the sheath and shielding along its entire length, looking for sharp bends, cracks or crush marks that could weaken the internal copper strands. A simple continuity test ensures that no internal break affects conduction.
