Description
The NRG-Y3 is a mains cable from AudioQuest, designed to connect a hi-fi audio device to the electrical supply. It is a dedicated power cable, intended to replace the generic mains lead originally supplied with an amplifier, a player or any other component in a system.
Its construction is based on direction-controlled Long-Grain Copper (LGC) strands, arranged in a semi-solid concentric structure. In this type of arrangement, the strands are packed more tightly against one another and remain in a fixed position within the bundle, which limits distortion caused by strand-to-strand interaction. The purity of LGC copper and its less complex grain structure also help reduce this distortion. The cable also incorporates silver-plated shielding conductors, likewise direction-controlled, which drain radio-frequency noise present on the line and neutral shields to earth via the third grounding pin.
This type of mains cable is intended for hi-fi enthusiasts wishing to refine the power supply of their system, particularly on systems that are already well optimised upstream and where the aim is to limit residual noise sources. It finds its place behind an amplifier, a DAC, a player or any device sensitive to the quality of the mains supply.
What to check before buying used
On a mains cable of this type, inspection focuses mainly on the mains plug and the IEC connector: the pins must remain perfectly straight, with no play and no sign of overheating at the contacts. The sheath should be checked along its entire length for any nick, marked twist, or area where the internal shielding is exposed. A firm, play-free fit of the connectors remains the best indicator of a unit that is still in working order.
