Description
The NRG-Z3 is a mains cable from AudioQuest, designed to connect an audio component to the wall socket. It replaces the original power cord supplied with an amplifier, a player or any other link in a hi-fi chain, with the aim of improving the quality of the electrical supply delivered to the internal circuits.
Its construction is based on Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) strands, arranged in semi-solid concentric conductors. The strands are tightly packed and do not change position within the bundle, which limits distortion caused by strand interaction. The purity and smooth surface of the PSC copper also reduce distortion caused by grain boundaries present in any metallic conductor.
The cable incorporates a ground noise-dissipation system as well as silver-plated shielding conductors, arranged in a controlled orientation. This assembly drains RF noise present on the line and neutral shields to ground via the earth pin. A common-mode phase-cancellation network completes the design by providing additional differential filtering.
This type of cable is aimed at users of a hi-fi system already equipped with good-quality sources and amplification, who are looking to refine the electrical supply to their components. What to check before buying used
On a mains cable such as the NRG-Z3, attention should focus mainly on the wall plug and the IEC connector: pins or a connector showing play, oxidation or signs of overheating indicate an imperfect contact, which is detrimental to the power supply the cable is meant to improve. Also check the sheath and the flex points near the connectors, areas where repeated bending can weaken the internal shielding without this being visible from the outside. The inherent stiffness typical of this type of audiophile cable should remain uniform along its full length, with no unusually soft section indicating broken strands.
