Description
The Red River is an interconnect cable by AudioQuest, designed to connect an audio source to an amplifier or preamplifier. It is offered in two versions depending on the system's connectivity: a classic RCA-RCA link and an XLR version with balanced structure, suited to differential setups.
The conductor is made of Long Grain Copper (LGC), a material chosen by AudioQuest to limit distortions caused by metal grain boundaries. The XLR version features a nitrogen-injected polyethylene foam dielectric, an insulator designed to reduce interactions between the signal and the cable's jacket. Both versions benefit from the NDS (Noise-Dissipation System), a proprietary filtering technology designed to drain away radio-frequency interference picked up by the cable before it reaches the audio signal.
The connectors are gold-plated and cold-welded rather than soldered, a process intended to ensure a stable and durable contact with the device's sockets, without a solder joint that could degrade over time.

What to check before buying used
The cold-welded connectors may loosen slightly over years of repeated plugging and unplugging: check that the RCA or XLR plugs remain perfectly fixed and do not turn freely in their housing. The polyethylene foam jacket, more fragile than a standard PVC jacket, should be examined along its full length for cracks or a crushed section that could affect the dielectric. On the XLR version, also test the connector's locking mechanism, as the latch can wear with use.
