Description
The AT-33EV is a moving magnet (MM) cartridge from Audio-Technica's AN33 series, derived from the AT33ANV released as a special edition in 2006 to mark the brand's 45th anniversary. It is fitted to a tonearm and converts the grooves of a vinyl record into an electrical signal intended for a phono preamplifier.
Its stylus tip, an elliptical-cut diamond (0.3 × 0.7 mm), is mounted on a tapered duralumin cantilever, an aluminium and copper alloy known for its rigidity. This construction limits distortion and favours a rich reproduction in the midrange and bass. The body and the stylus lever pivot incorporate a resin known as "Hanenite", designed to absorb unwanted vibrations so that the moving coils can operate without mechanical interference.
The cartridge delivers an output voltage of 0.3 mV and covers a frequency response of 15 Hz to 50,000 Hz, with a channel separation of 30 dB and a channel balance of 0.5 dB at 1 kHz. Its dynamic compliance of 10 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne at 100 Hz and its vertical tracking angle of 23° determine its compatibility with certain tonearms.

What to check before buying used
The duralumin cantilever suspension loses flexibility over time: a dull sound or drifted compliance points to a worn cartridge, particularly after several decades in storage. Examine the elliptical stylus under magnification for micro-chips or asymmetric wear, and check that the four connection wires and the Hanenite resin on the body show no signs of oxidation or detachment. A re-tipped diamond or a damaged moving coil will noticeably alter the stated frequency response and channel separation.
