Description
The Audio Technica AT-LP5X turntable is a direct-drive model, DC motor-driven, fitted with a switchable RIAA phono preamplifier and a USB-B port allowing records to be digitised directly to a computer.
It is supplied with the Audio Technica VM95E moving magnet cartridge, whose para-toroidal-shaped coils are made from high-purity OFC copper. VM technology, based on two magnets arranged in a V, increases the magnetic performance of the cartridge. An isolation plate between the coils brings channel separation to 20 dB at 1 kHz, reduces distortion and allows linear response from 20 Hz to 22 kHz. Starting torque above 1.0 kgf.cm and speed fluctuation below 0.2% WRMS at 33 rpm demonstrate well-controlled rotational stability, while the electronic braking system stops the platter without manual intervention. Analogue-to-digital conversion via the USB port is performed at 16-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz, through a USB 2.0 interface compatible with Windows and Mac.
This turntable is aimed at those who want to listen to records with an already built-in phono preamp, without a dedicated external amplifier, or who want to archive their collection in digital format via the USB port.

What to check before buying used
The VM95E cartridge is a removable model: check the condition of the stylus and its attachment to the cartridge body, as well as the tonearm alignment. Check that the electronic braking system works properly and that rotational speed is stable at both settings, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Also test the USB function and the switchable phono preamp to ensure they deliver a clean signal.
