Description
The AT-LP7X is a fully manual belt-drive turntable designed by Audio-Technica for demanding analogue playback. It features a switchable MM/MC phono preamp, allowing it to be connected directly to an amplifier without a separate phono stage, while retaining the option of using moving coil cartridges.
The 20 mm thick acrylic platter rests on a dense MDF plinth, a combination designed to limit resonances that can colour the sound. The DC motor, controlled by an optical sensor, maintains a constant speed at 33-1/3 and 45 rpm; it is mounted on rubber isolators that mechanically decouple it from the chassis. The external switching power supply isolates the AC-DC conversion to limit electrical interference, and the adjustable spring-loaded feet filter out external vibrations.
The J-shaped aluminium tonearm draws on a geometry inspired by Audio-Technica models from the 1960s-1970s. It rests on a dual-pivot gimbal with precision ball bearings, for more consistent groove tracking. The AT-LT10 headshell accommodates an AT-VM95E cartridge with a 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical stylus, itself interchangeable with other styli from the VM95 range. VTA adjustment and an additional 16 g counterweight allow cartridge/headshell assemblies of up to 23.5 g to be fitted, with the option to go further using a 32 g counterweight sold separately.
This turntable is aimed at vinyl enthusiasts who want to retain control over every stage of playback, from VTA adjustment to cartridge selection, without relying on an automatic mechanism. The ability to switch between MM and MC cartridges also makes it a sound choice for those looking to develop their phono setup over time.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the AT-VMN95E BK stylus, whose wear, directly linked to listening hours, affects playback and can damage grooves; without proof of purchase, a replacement should be anticipated. Inspect the drive belt for any signs of stretching or cracking that would cause speed variations, and check the tonearm alignment as well as the fitting of the AT-LT10 headshell. A look at the acrylic platter will also help spot any marks or micro-cracks.
