Description
The AT2000T is a step-up transformer designed to be inserted between a moving coil cartridge and a preamplification stage. It allows the use of MC cartridges whose naturally low output level requires a voltage step-up before amplification, in order to reproduce the analogue signal under good conditions.
Its EI-type ferromagnetic transformer features a core made up of 70% Permalloy, an alloy which limits magnetic losses as the signal passes through. This construction contributes to faithful sound reproduction. The unit accepts a wide range of moving coil cartridges, with an impedance between 2 and 17 ohms, allowing it to be paired with many MC cartridge models on the market.
The transformer's body is made of sealed metal, a design which strengthens isolation against external electromagnetic interference and reduces resonance phenomena specific to the transformer. This constructional rigour aims to preserve signal quality throughout the entire analogue playback chain.

What to check before buying used
The winding and shielding are the sensitive points of this step-up transformer: a worn winding or one that is partially short-circuited results in a loss of level, an unbalanced sound image between channels or abnormal background noise. Check that the sealed metal body shows no impact damage or signs of having been opened, which would compromise isolation against electromagnetic interference. Also check the condition of the input and output connectors, often stressed by repeated connections to different MC cartridges, as well as the absence of hum when in contact with a power supply or a turntable motor.
