Description
The ATH-AD500X is an open-back pair of headphones from Audio-Technica, designed for natural and precise listening at home. The open, perforated housings allow air to circulate around the transducers, giving an airy listening sensation, in contrast to the confined feel of closed-back headphones.
The headphones feature new wide-aperture transducers, fitted with CCAW voice coils (copper-clad aluminium wire), a technology aimed at delivering a powerful reproduction of midrange and low frequencies. Support is provided by a 3D Wing headband system, which automatically adjusts to the shape of the head to distribute pressure and limit pressure points, while the slow-recovery foam ear pads, covered in soft velour, extend this comfort over long listening sessions.
The cable is single-sided, made of OFC copper, protected by an elastic TPE sheath that limits tangling and micro-cuts caused by twisting. It ends in a gold-plated 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack connector, supplied with a 6.3 mm adaptor for direct connection to an amplifier or a Hi-Fi system.
These headphones are intended for stationary use, for listening to music at home from a Hi-Fi source or a computer, rather than on the move: the open-back design lets sound pass through to the outside and does not isolate you from ambient noise. They will suit a listener looking for an open soundstage and lasting comfort over several hours of listening.

What to check before buying used
On these open-back headphones, check the condition of the slow-recovery foam ear pads: they compress and crumble over time, affecting acoustic isolation and comfort. Also check the flexibility of the 3D Wing headband, which can lose its elasticity, as well as the gold-plated connector on the single-sided OFC copper cable, which is prone to poor contact from repeated twisting. A listening test on both channels will confirm that the CCAW transducers have not deteriorated.
