Description
The ATH-M50x is a closed-back circumaural headphone, designed for studio monitoring and mixing as well as personal listening or DJ monitoring. It relies on large-aperture 45 mm dynamic drivers, paired with neodymium magnets and CCAW (copper-clad aluminium wire) voice coils, a combination aimed at accurate reproduction across the entire sound spectrum.
Its closed-back structure, fitted with circumaural earcups, provides passive isolation from ambient noise, an advantage for focusing on listening in noisy environments or for preventing sound leakage during recording. The earcups swivel 90°, allowing single-ear listening, a useful feature in a control room or DJ booth. The headphones are also foldable, making them easier to transport.
On the connectivity side, the ATH-M50x uses a detachable cable and a gold-plated 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack connector. It comes with three interchangeable cables: a 1.2 m to 3 m coiled cable for studio use, a 3 m straight cable and a short 1.2 m straight cable for portable use. Its impedance of 38 ohms and sensitivity of 99 dB, combined with a maximum input power of 1,600 mW at 1 kHz, allow it to work equally well with portable sources and studio equipment.

What to check before buying used
The earpad and headband cushions, the parts most prone to wear on the ATH-M50x, warrant a visual check: flattening, cracking or peeling of the synthetic leather is common on units that have seen heavy use. Also check the 90° swivelling hinge on the earcups, which is stressed every time the headphones are stored, as well as the fit of the detachable mini-jack connector in its socket. Finally, test both channels with each of the supplied cables to rule out any loose contact at the jack or at the connector on the headphone side.
