Description
The B&W 606 S3 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker intended for hi-fi or home cinema use. It succeeds the 606 with a new titanium dome tweeter and a revised signal path, while retaining the compact format characteristic of this range.
The 165 mm bass-midrange driver uses a Continuum cone, paired with a 25 mm titanium dome tweeter fully decoupled from the cabinet. This decoupling limits mechanical interference between the two drivers and aims for a wider, more transparent soundstage. In front of the tweeter, a grille designed to remain neutral lets the entire signal through without additional colouration.
The loading is bass-reflex, with a Flowport vent at the rear of the cabinet. The speaker accepts amplification between 30 and 120 W into 8 ohms, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 3.7 ohms) and a sensitivity of 88 dB/1 W/1 m. The frequency response extends from 52 Hz to 28 kHz (+/- 3 dB), with distortion below 1% from 100 Hz to 22 kHz and below 0.5% from 150 Hz to 12 kHz. The driver cover is made of fabric, held in place by magnetic fixing, and the speaker is compatible with bi-wiring and bi-amping.
This model is intended for use as a main speaker on a compact hi-fi system or as channels in a home cinema system, with moderately powered amplifiers given the recommended range of 30 to 120 W.

What to check before buying used
The suspension of the 165 mm driver deserves close inspection: hardened, cracked or already repaired foam or rubber affects bass performance and points to storage in damp conditions. Also check that the magnetic grille holds firmly without play and that the tweeter's titanium dome shows no dents or signs of handling. Finally, inspect the Flowport vent at the rear and the cabinet (corners, veneer, chips), which often reveal transport knocks or prolonged exposure to sunlight.
