Description
The 702 S3 is a three-way floorstanding speaker from Bowers & Wilkins' 700 Series range, designed in a bass-reflex configuration with a port. It combines a carbon dome tweeter, a dedicated midrange driver and three woofers, for separate reproduction of each register and precise sound imaging.
The carbon dome tweeter is housed in a Solid Body enclosure machined from a solid block of aluminium, decoupled from the rest of the speaker to limit resonance; its resonance threshold sits at 47 kHz. The midrange driver is built around the Continuum cone, a composite construction that avoids breakup behaviour in the transducer and favours a neutral rendering of voice and instruments. The three woofers use an Aerofoil Profile cone with variable thickness, designed to offer rigidity and lightness where needed, resulting in deep, dynamic bass. Frequency response extends from 28 Hz to 33 kHz at -6 dB, with a sensitivity of 90 dB/1W/1m and distortion below 1% from 86 Hz to 28 kHz at 90 dB.

What to check before buying used
On this three-way model, it is worth checking the condition of the suspensions on the three Aerofoil woofers, which can stiffen or crack over time, as well as the integrity of the tweeter's carbon dome, which is sensitive to impact. The decoupling of the tweeter and midrange enclosure should remain firm, with no play or rattling when gently moved. A test at gradually increasing volume can reveal any resonance noise or distortion across the three drive units.
