Description
The 703 S3 is a three-way Bass-reflex floorstanding speaker, designed by Bowers & Wilkins to equip a high-end stereo hi-fi system or home cinema installation. It introduces the Tweeter-on-Top configuration to the 700 Series range for the first time, a dedicated tweeter enclosure, decoupled from the rest of the speaker and machined from a solid block of aluminium to limit resonance.
The carbon dome tweeter, developed specifically for this range, has a resonance threshold pushed back to 47 kHz, allowing precise and detailed treble reproduction. The midrange driver uses a Continuum cone of composite construction combined with FST technology and a biomimetic suspension; this midrange driver is decoupled from the woofers to limit mechanical interference between drivers. The two woofers with Aerofoil Profile cones, of variable thickness, offer targeted rigidity at the most stressed points, for deep and dynamic bass. With a sensitivity of 90 dB/1W/1m and an impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 3.1 ohms), the 703 S3 accepts a power handling of 200 W RMS and can be driven with an amplifier of 30 to 200 W RMS at 8 ohms.
This speaker is aimed at demanding listeners looking for a floorstanding speaker capable of reproducing voices and instruments with precision and neutrality, in a living room or dedicated listening room where its extended frequency response, from 30 Hz to 33 kHz at -6 dB, can fully express itself.

What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the two Aerofoil woofers warrant a visual check, as sagging or tearing of the foam could affect bass reproduction. Also check for any play or unwanted noise from the Tweeter-on-Top enclosure, whose decoupling should remain firm on its aluminium plinth. A test at moderate volume on each channel allows any defect in the Continuum midrange cone or the tweeter's carbon dome to be identified.
