Description
The 705 S3 is a bass-reflex 2-way bookshelf speaker, designed for a compact stereo setup. It combines a carbon dome tweeter with a 16.5 cm Continuum-cone midrange/bass driver, in a cabinet designed to limit resonances inherent to the enclosure.
The tweeter is housed in a Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top module, machined from a solid block of aluminium and decoupled from the rest of the cabinet. Its elongated shape incorporates a Nautilus-type tube loading system, which contributes to a more open treble rendering. The carbon dome has a resonance threshold at 47 kHz, a point that enhances sound image precision and detail reproduction. The midrange/bass driver, with its Continuum composite cone, is designed to avoid the abrupt breakup behaviour that can be observed with more conventional cones, delivering a more neutral tonal balance on voices and instruments.

What to check before buying used
The solid aluminium Tweeter-on-Top cabinet should be checked at the point where it decouples from the speaker body, an area sensitive to handling knocks. Also check the condition of the Continuum cone on the midrange/bass driver, in particular for any deformation or dents that would affect its linearity. A test at moderate then higher volume allows detection of any unwanted noise or distortion from the carbon dome tweeter.
