Description
The 706 S3 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker from B&W, part of the 700 Series. It combines a decoupled carbon dome tweeter with a 165 mm Continuum cone midrange/woofer, designed to deliver a high level of detail while retaining enough scale to fill larger rooms.
The carbon dome tweeter, developed specifically for this range, has a resonance point pushed up to 47 kHz. Moving this outside the audible spectrum results in a more precise soundstage and finer detail retrieval, an improvement over the previous double-dome aluminium tweeter. Thanks to its composite construction, the Continuum cone avoids the abrupt behavioural transitions that can affect the output of a conventional driver: the result is a more open and neutral reproduction of voices and instruments. The cabinet features a curved baffle and individual pods for each driver, a design that reduces cabinet-related coloration. The speaker also incorporates a Flowport vent.
This speaker is suited to stereo bookshelf setups or home cinema configurations, for listeners seeking precise reproduction of voices and instruments in medium to large listening spaces, with amplification capable of delivering between 30 W and 120 W into 8 Ω.

What to check before buying used
The Continuum cone of the midrange/woofer driver should be examined under raking light to rule out any deformation, dents or signs of impact, and the tweeter's carbon dome deserves a similar inspection given how fragile it is to careless handling. The individual pods and curved baffle may show micro-cracks or fixing marks not immediately visible: checking the tightness and alignment of the drivers on their mounts is advisable. It is also worth listening to the Flowport vent at high volume to detect any whistling or parasitic air noise indicating deformation of the duct.
